Department of Economic Development

In order to promote economic development policies, the National Development Council has established the Department of Economic Development to manage matters like overall planning, policy coordination and deliberation, resources allocation and so on. It has 1 director, 2 deputy directors, and 6 sections. The main operations include: studying, planning, deliberating, coordinating and promoting domestic macroeconomic policies and measures; studying, planning, deliberating, coordinating and promoting international trade policies and measures; studying mainland China’s and the cross-Straits economic situations, and designing policy responses accordingly; studying domestic and international economic prospects and trends, and updating the Business Cycle Index; studying on the utilization of overall resources and economic structural adjustments, and planning, deliberating, coordinating and promoting related policies; deliberating and coordinating financial matters for major national construction projects.

The names and duties for the various sections under the Economic Department are as follows:

Macro Economy Section:

1. Studying, planning, deliberating, coordinating and promoting national macroeconomic economic policies.
2. Studying, planning, coordinating, promoting and evaluating major economic policies and plans.
3. Studying domestic economic situation and important economic issues.
4. Other assigned matters.

International Economy Section:

1. Studying international economic situations and issues, and designing policy responses.
2. Studying, planning, deliberating, coordinating and promoting international trade policies and measures.
3. Studying issues related to participate in international trade organizations and regional economic integrations, and designing strategies and policies accordingly.
4. Studying issues related to international competitiveness evaluation, and reviewing and improving Taiwan’s international competitiveness performance.
5. Other assigned matters.

Mainland China Economy Section:

1. Studying mainland China’s (including Hong Kong and Macao) macroeconomic situation and policies, and designing policy responses.
2. Studying the cross-Straits trade and economic relations, and designing policy responses.
3. Providing a quarterly update on the cross-Straits and mainland China’s (including Hong Kong and Macao) economic situations.
4. Other assigned matters.

Business Cycle Section:

1. Studying domestic and international economic prospects and trends, as well as related issues.
2. Studying and updating the domestic Business Cycle index.
3. Studying domestic and international business cycles.
4. Other assigned matters.

Resources Economy Section:

1. Maintaining resource utilization models and input-output models; performing impact analysis of major economic policies and issues.
2. Studying issues related to economic structural adjustment, overall and local industrial economy, and business environment, and designing policies responses.
3. Studying resources economy, and overseeing and evaluating related projects and plans.
4. Other assigned matters.

Finance Planning Section:

1. Providing financial planning for major national construction projects.
2. Deliberating and coordinating financial matters for major national construction projects.
3. Studying financial strategies and related issues for public construction projects.
4. Other assigned matters.
